Integral Powertrain is proud to announce that its e-Drive division was awarded the Royal Automobile Club’s coveted Dewar Trophy on Wednesday 31 October 2018 at the Pall Mall clubhouse.
The prestigious award honours the most outstanding technical achievement and innovation in the British automotive industry. The 2018 Dewar Trophy was awarded to Integral Powertrain Limited for the development of the integrated electric motors and inverters which powered the 2018 Pikes Peak winning car.
Integral e-Drive designed and manufactured the highly efficient and exceptionally power-dense integrated motors and inverters which powered the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak car to outright victory and a new all-time record at the 2018 event. The electric car proved faster than any internal combustion-engined car and set the fastest time in the hill climb history, which spans more than 100 years. The same core electric motor technology is being used by Aston Martin in their very first all-electric production car, the Rapide E, which is also the world’s first 800V BEV.
With an impressive track record in powertrain engineering, Milton Keynes based Integral Powertrain, has the ability to engineer motors into the most demanding applications. The Aston Martin Rapide E and the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak car are all at the leading edge in pushing forward the next generation of electrification technology.
Making the award, Dewar Technical Committee Chairman, John Wood MBE, said:

Nothing else comes near in terms of the combination of power and torque densities coupled with such high efficiency. This success speaks volumes for the intensely focussed and determined approach to pushing the boundaries of technology that clearly exists at Integral Powertrain”.
Receiving the Dewar Trophy, Roger Duckworth, a Director of Integral Powertrain said:

The Volkswagen I.D R Pikes Peak engineering programme had ambitious technical and aggressive timing targets. Through the hard work and team spirit of all partners an optimum solution was created in a record 4 ½ months; the fruits of those endeavours being outright victory and a new all-time record at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs.”
Roger’s late father Keith Duckworth was also awarded the Dewar Trophy in 1969 for the design of the Ford Formula 1 engine which revolutionised Formula One.
In a year which marks Integral Powertrain’s 20th anniversary, the Dewar Trophy caps off a very successful year for the Milton Keynes based company who recently announced their collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering as e-Drive technology partner for the first all-electric Aston Martin Rapide E. The limited production of 155 cars to be built at Aston Martin’s St. Athan site, will deliver four-door sports car looks and dynamics of the Rapide S powered by an all-electric powertrain replacing the six-litre V12 engine.
The Dewar Trophy
The Dewar Trophy was presented to the Royal Automobile Club in 1904 by Sir Thomas Dewar, MP (later Lord Dewar), and was to be awarded at the discretion of the Club’s Dewar Technical Committee for the most meritorious performance by an automobile manufacturer in the Certified Trials held by the Club.
The first recipients of the award in 1906 were Dennis Brothers Limited of Guildford, whose 20hp car covered a distance of 4000 miles. The award goes to an outstanding British technical achievement in the automotive field during the preceding year or one that is known to have reached a significant stage of development, application or utilisation during the year.

About the Royal Automobile Club
The Royal Automobile Club was founded in 1897 and its distinguished history mirrors that of motoring itself. In 1907, the Club was awarded its Royal title by King Edward VII, sealing the Club’s status as Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisation.
The Club’s early years were focused on promoting the motor car and its place in society, which developed into motoring events such as the 1000 Mile Trial, first held in 1900. In 1905, the Club held the first Tourist Trophy, which remains the oldest trophy competed for in motor sports.
