Integral e-Drive powers Volkswagen Motorsport I.D. R Pikes Peak to new world records

Congratulations and celebrations have spread all over the world and not least to leading e-Drive Technology Company, Integral Powertrain Ltd, headquartered in Milton Keynes.  Integral e-Drive, a division of Integral Powertrain Ltd, supplied the two high power density SPM electric motors designed specifically to power Volkswagen Motorsport’s I.D. R Pikes Peak all electric race car and break records.

Volkswagen and the fully-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak have made history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Driving the 500-kW (680 PS) I.D. R Pikes Pecomak, Romain Dumas (F) defeated a field including cars with conventional drivetrain technology. In doing so, he not only broke the previous record for electric vehicles, but also bettered Sébastien Loeb’s (F) all-time record from 2013 – by a full 16 seconds. Dumas’ new record of 7m 57.148s minutes is now top of the list of Pikes Peak champions, which includes such acclaimed drivers as Loeb, Walter Röhrl (D), Michèle Mouton (F), Stig Blomqvist (S), Nobuhiro Tajima (J) and also Rod Millen and his son Rhys (both NZ).

Sven Smeets, Volkswagen Motorsport Director said of the record:

“The new all-time record at Pikes Peak is a fantastic achievement for Volkswagen and one, of which we are very proud. The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the most innovative and complex car ever developed by Volkswagen Motorsport.  Of course our technical partners played a key role in this project. We relied on Integral e-drive for the development of the highly sophisticated electric motors which power the Volkswagen I.D. R. Pikes Peak. Integral e-drive provided us the competitive edge to outperform the high altitude and challenging turns and set a new overall record. Thank you to everyone involved.”

During the run up to the 24th, including a week of successful test runs and qualification stages, the Integral e-Drive team were on hand to make sure things went smoothly in preparation for the one and only attempt at the mountain.  Arnaud Martin – Chief Engineer Motorsport, and his team back in the UK, worked tirelessly with the Volkswagen Motorsport team to optimise the I.D. R Pike Peaks performance. Of the project Arnaud says:

“This project was an incredible challenge from the weight targets and timescales in which the motors and inverters would have to be designed and delivered. The whole approach had to be very “motorsport” where every opportunity to save time had to be implemented; midnight had to be burnt. The close working relationship between Integral Powertrain and Volkswagen Motorsport allowed issues to be resolved in record time and the optimum technical solution be implemented. It is only through the hard work and team spirit of all partners that such feat could be achieved in such short timescales.”

Integral e-Drive are proud to have been part of this historic moment in electric racing history and would like to congratulate Romain Dumas and the Volkswagen Motorsport team on this momentous achievement.
