Jonathan Peters European Duathlon Championships

Jonathan off to European Duathlon Championships (Ibiza)

Following a credible 5th place in this year’s World Championships Jonathan is heading off to Ibiza for the European Championships.

How was our man in Denmark?

The World Championship in Denmark was a tough race but another great experience for Jonathan. A terrific atmosphere, no doubt the result of athletes from all over the world filling the town of Odense for a week of racing. He finished 5th in his age group, lower than the 4th place achieved in Penticton last year, but still enough to pre-qualify for the 2019 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. He needed to run at close to PB pace in the race to account for the disadvantage of being a weaker cyclist on the fast flat bike course. In retrospect he probably worked a little too hard early on in the first 10km run leg, which he paid for later on in the race. It was always a risky tactic, and sometimes risks don’t pay off! Either way Jonathan learnt a lot; the race experience only built his motivation to try and go faster in future!

Preparation is key

After a few weeks of easy training Jonathan started to prepare for the next challenge, the ETU European AG Championships on the 21st October; racing over the 10Km-40km-5km Standard Distance Duathlon. Once again he will be displaying the Integral e-Drive logo with pride on his GBR race suit!

Over the summer he started to work with a local coach to improve his cycling and general race pacing, along with improvements to the bike itself and riding position. There’s still a lot of work to do over the winter to try and build power, but hopefully he can take some of the learning and apply it on the cycle leg in this race. A 5000m PB over the summer suggests his running form is still okay, so he’s looking forward to the race, providing the forecast storms don’t dampen things too much!

Go Jonathan!
