Engineers in focus | Designing high performance electric motors

Integral Powertrain Ltd’s e-Drive division (IP) kicked off the New Year with the major announcement of their partnership with Penske Motorsport to support the design and development of a high performance electric powertrain for their Season 6 ABB Formula E race car.

Projects like this need experienced engineers to design an develop the high performance technology sought by our clients. As we seek new staff to join our award winning team, we would like to share the stories of two of our engineers who have played essential roles in defining our electric machines.

Bushra Hai joined IP at the start of 2017 as a Senior Electronics Engineer and Alex Oldroyd joined us in 2018 as a Senior Design Engineer.

About Alex

After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 2010 with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, I joined the Mercedes AMG HPP Graduate scheme. In 2011 I was given a permanent position as a Mechanical Design Engineer within the Internal Combustion Team. In this role I was responsible for the design, simulation, validation and performance of mechanical systems within the V8 and V6 Formula-1 ICE engine.

While at Mercedes, we won both the Drivers and Constructors Formula 1 Championship for four successive race seasons. I joined Integral Powertrain in 2018 as a Senior Design Engineer, designing Electrical Motors for the automotive industry.

My role at IP

As a Principal Design Engineer at IP I am responsible for the mechanical design of powertrain and electric machines. I am required to adapt our existing technologies and pioneer new concepts to respond to customer specifications.

I applied to work at IP because I recognised that the automotive industry is undergoing significant changes and I wanted to be involved in progressing new technologies to meet tomorrow’s requirements. Engineering at IP is driven by first principles which allows us to quickly develop technology to match our customers’ requirements.

What made you want to become an engineer?

I naturally migrated towards engineering as I enjoyed maths, physics and art/design at school. As a child I enjoyed playing with creative toys, frequently playing with Lego and in the Summer holidays my mum would buy me craft/science kits which I would follow to make anything from keyrings to pressure sensitive burglar alarms!

What most excites you about your role?

I enjoy working with a team of motivated and dedicated people, to develop new technologies to change how vehicles are powered. It is exciting to work in an industry that is quickly evolving and participate in the pursuit of sustainable energy.

What are your interests outside work?

Outside of work I design and make my own silver jewellery. I also enjoy going to the gym and riding my mountain bike.

About Bushra

I grew up partly in Saudi Arabia where I was born and then near Heathrow in London. I studied at Queen Mary University in London where I acquired an MEng in Electronics Engineering.  I have enjoyed 11 years of experience working in Engineering from small, handheld industrial measurement devices to power electronics in the Aerospace and Automotive sectors. I am also a proud mum of two, my children are my biggest motivation.

My role at IP

I am part of a rapidly growing Electronics and Software team where my key responsibilities are the design and test of High Voltage Inverters from concept to a customer product. I have also volunteered to train in ISO:9001 so that I can carry out internal auditing and support the Company in the push for better Quality Management.

I was first introduced to IP whilst working in the R&D department of an aerospace company as I curiously held a starter motor that the company had purchased from IP for prototyping purposes. As I researched, I was delighted to find that a traditional Mechanical Engineering company were now looking to incorporate electronics so I directly applied.

What made you want to become an engineer?

I have always been around engineering as my father was a Civil Engineer. I was a child of the 80’s so when the internet (as slow as it was) became accessible in schools and homes it opened up my world to information on how things worked. I began to discover how a washing machine would operate at the mere switch of a button to the rotation of the jet engine that I observed with fascination as I waited for my flight. As the information became more easily available, that’s when I knew I wanted to be a part of creating electronics that made peoples’ lives easier.

What most excites you about your role?

The developments are fast-paced and the products are innovative. It is satisfying to be a part of the technology behind hybrid/electrical vehicles.

What are your interests outside work?

I am a busy mum of two and love spending time with my kids. When I get free time I like to prioritise relaxation.
